Meat and meat product prices up in Georgia

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Nov. 13

By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

Meat and meat product price is 3.4 percent up in the last year in Georgia, Trend reports via Georgian media.

Meat producers declare, that the surge is driven by the rise of animal feed prices on the international market and lari exchange rate.

"Prices on food raw materials are rising on the international market, which is added by the devaluation of our national currency. As a result, we got a double blow, and that conditioned price rise. For example, if soybean meal imported to Georgia cost $500 including VAT a month ago, today it costs $600. Devaluation of lari is added $100 price increase”, said Davit Shalamberidze, director of Invet company.

According to him, the cost of 1 kg of poultry meat is in the range of 5-5.5 lari ($1.52-$1.67). However, the price might be increased by 1 lari (30 cents) further in a few weeks.

Today, the average cost of 1 km meat totals to 23-24 lari ($7-$7.31). Part of the producers say that the cost of pork has remained unchanged, merely beef price is grown.

According to the meat production company "Tserti", in their case, the price is determined by the cost of imported feed, due to which meat price is already increased by 1 lari (30 cents).

Meat is 1-2 lari (30-61 cents) cheaper on the agrarian markets.

Meat production shows a growing trend in the country. According to Georgian National Statistics Service (Geostat), 16,300 tons of meat was produced in Georgia in the second quarter, which is higher compared to the same period of the last year.
