Georgia sees increase in milk prices

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Nov. 19

By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

A basket of dairy products, which cost 114 lari ($34.63) a year ago, has risen in price by almost 10 lari ($3.04) and by October 2020 cost 125 lari ($37.97) in Georgia, Trend reports via Georgian media.

A particularly rapid rise in prices began in 2018, and in 2019 this process became even more noticeable.

The rise in prices for raw milk had the greatest impact on the price of cheese. Consequently, cheese has risen in price over the past year.

Kakha Koniashvili, president of the Association of Milk and Dairy Producers, says that the main factor driving the rise in milk prices was the fluctuating exchange rate of the lari.

“In Georgia, the price of milk went up, and it depended on several factors. First, in terms of animal feed, this year has been pretty barren. The climatic conditions of the environment did not induce the farmer to receive the amount of food that would allow him to stabilize the market and worry less about importing food. As a result, the farmer became more dependent on imported food products, and since the exchange rate of the lari fell sharply, this led to an increase in prices for imported raw materials, which, in turn, affected the cost,” Koniashvili said.
