Uzbekistan purchases substantial quantity of medicines from India to contain COVID-19

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Dec. 22

Uzbekistan purchased a substantial quantity of medicines from India to contain COVID-19 infection in the country, Ambassador of India to Uzbekistan Manish Prabhat told Trend commenting on joint projects for combating coronavirus infection.

As strategic partners, India and Uzbekistan have cooperated in the field of tackling the COVID-19 pandemic which threatens both India and Uzbekistan.

According to the ambassador, early during the onset of the pandemic, in May 2020 and later in July 2020, India gifted medicines to Uzbekistan.

"India was the primary source of supply of Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) globally and supplied many medicines to more than 150 countries during the ongoing pandemic," Prabhat stressed.

Prabhat added that India is thankful that Uzbekistan conducted special flights to bring back stranded Indian citizens in Uzbekistan to India and take back stranded Uzbek citizens in India.

Regarding Uzbekistan’s supplement of vaccines against coronavirus by India, the ambassador said that both countries will explore cooperation in the field of vaccine development for COVID-19.

"In fact, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that India, which produces more than 60 percent of all vaccines in the world, would be happy to share its production and delivery capacity for the good of humanity. We have also offered the vaccine to our Uzbek friends," the ambassador outlined.

Earlier it was reported that pharmaceutical exports from India to Uzbekistan have particularly risen during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, a leading Indian pharmaceuticals company Cadila Pharmaceuticals announced an investment in starting a pharmaceutical manufacturing plant in the Andijan region with an investment of $50 million.
