Turkmenistan and Afghanistan signed a program of cooperation between two countries for 2021-2022 after consultations, Trend reports with reference to Turkmenistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The signing took place in the city of Kabul (Afghanistan) between Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan Mohammad Hanif Atmar.

The sixth session of Joint Turkmen-Afghan Commission on security was also held on the same day.

During the meeting, the sides exchanged views on strengthening partnership in countering current threats and challenges, including terrorism, extremism, cyber attacks, etc. The two countries expressed their readiness to strengthen cross-border cooperation and maintain information security.

Following the meeting, the Protocol of the sixth session of Joint Turkmen-Afghan Commission on cooperation in the field of security was adopted after the meeting.

Turkmenistan is the leader in terms of gasoline supplies to Afghanistan.

Turkmenistan is also one of the three largest suppliers of diesel fuel and liquefied natural gas.

Afghanistan purchased more than 337,000 tons of motor gasoline and about 40,000 tons of diesel fuel of various brands, more than 147,000 tons of liquefied gas, more than 4,000 tons of gas condensate, about 1,400 tons of polypropylene, and other products of the oil and gas sector, with a total cost of more than $ 230 million for 9 months of 2020.

In addition, duty-free deliveries of petroleum products were carried out to Afghanistan, including more than 140,000 tons of diesel fuel, 30,000 tons of aviation kerosene, and other fuel and energy products. Their value in the first three quarters of 2020 amounted to more than $180 million.

Fuel from Turkmenistan to Afghanistan is transported mainly by rail. The international steel highway of the first stage Atamurat-Ymamnazar-Akina was put into operation at the end of 2016.

A major facility on the entire 88-kilometer route is the terminal for receiving, storing, and shipping petroleum products in Ymamnazar.
