Georgia exported 15,600 tons of hazelnuts worth $81.2 million from August 1, 2020, through February 9, 2021, Trend reports via the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture of Georgia.

The volume of exports of hazelnuts for the specified period was 5,200 tons (50 percent) higher, and the value of exports was $27.7 million (52 percent) higher than in the same period of 2019/2020.

Georgian hazelnuts are mainly exported to EU markets, namely Germany (4,253 tons), Italy (3,823 tons), Czech Republic (738 tons), Spain (445 tons), Lithuania (442 tons), France (381 tons), Poland (376 tons). tons), Bulgaria (345 tons), Latvia (128 tons), Greece (97 tons), Estonia (88 tons), Slovakia (86 tons), Luxembourg (84 tons), Belgium (44 tons), and Austria (22 tons)

Georgian hazelnuts are also exported to countries such as Russia (756 tons), Turkey (530 tons), Belarus (466 tons), Ukraine (300 tons), Brazil (186 tons), Algeria (185 tons), Saudi Arabia (180 tons ), Canada (146 tons), Switzerland (111 tons), Mexico (67 tons), Uzbekistan (58 tons), Syria (50 tons), United Arab Emirates (44 tons), Azerbaijan (44 tons), Jordan (38 tons ), Great Britain (35 tons), Israel (32 tons), Iraq (24 tons), US (19 tons) and others.

The ministry reported that hazelnut production, hence exports, has been declining since 2016 following the spread of brown marmorated stink bugs (BMSB) and fungal diseases and reached a minimum of 17,000 tons in 2018.

The large-scale measures taken by the relevant services and farmers against stink bugs resulted in high-quality hazelnut harvest collected in 2020.

The export of hazelnuts from Azerbaijan to Georgia decreased in 2020. In 2020 Georgia imported 553 tons of hazelnuts from Azerbaijan worth $343,120.
