Georgia sees decrease in external merchandise trade

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Feb. 15

External Merchandise Trade (excluding non-declared trade) of Georgia amounted to $763.9 million in January 2021, Trend reports via the National Statistics Office reports (Geostat).

As reported, this is 16.3 percent lower year-on-year.

The value of export decreased by 16.2 percent reaching $224.4 million, while the import decreased by 16.4 percent and amounted to $539.4 million. The trade deficit equaled $315 million and its share in trade turnover constituted 41.2 percent.

The external merchandise trade (excluding non-declared trade) of Georgia amounted to $11.34 billion in 2020, 14.8 percent lower year-on-year.

The exports equaled $3.34 billion (12 percent lower), while the imports stood at $8 billion (15.9 percent lower). The negative trade balance was $4.66 billion in 2020 and its share in external trade turnover constituted 41.1 percent.

In 2020, the share of the top ten trading partners by exports in the total exports of Georgia amounted to 75.9 percent. The top partners were China ($476.3 million), Azerbaijan ($441.3 million), and Russia ($441.1 million).
