EU shares new programs to be implemented in Georgia in 2021

BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 4

By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

New programs to be implemented by the European Union (EU) in Georgia in 2021 focus mainly on the recovery from COVID-19, the Delegation of the EU to Georgia told Trend.

According to the source, they include:

• The EU’s State Building and Resilience Contract for Georgia, to support Georgia's Anti-Crisis Economic Plan, designed to help citizens of Georgia recover from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

• The EU Resilience Facility for Georgia: Economy, Environment, Health and Migration Management supporting Georgia in abiding by the priorities of the Association Agreement while at the same time helping Georgia in addressing the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on its socioeconomic situation and the healthcare system.

• The European Union and the WHO Regional Office for Europe will work together in a major effort to support the deployment of COVID-19 vaccines and vaccination in Georgia. The project funded by the European Union and implemented by WHO will cover all phases - constituting "end-to-end" support - of COVID-19 vaccine deployment and vaccination and will also serve as a major investment to strengthen the routine immunization system. The project will be implemented by WHO over a three-year period as part of a €40 million European Union-funded initiative to support six countries in the WHO European Region in preparing for, deploying, and monitoring the rollout of COVID-19 vaccines.

"The EU has over 130 projects active in Georgia in the areas of economic development, education and labor policies, governance, human rights, energy, environment, culture, and people-to-people contacts with a total budget of around 500 million euros," the EU said.

According to the source, around two-thirds of this amount targets economic development and jobs, around a quarter supports good governance and values, and almost 10 percent is aimed towards environment policies, with the remainder focusing on people-to-people contacts and culture.
