The value of Iran’s exports through the Mahabad border checkpoint of the West Azerbaijan Province (northwestern Iran) decreased by 40 percent in the last Iranian year (from March 20, 2020, through March 20, 2021), compared to the preceding Iranian year (from March 21, 2019, through March 19, 2020), Director of the Mahabad Customs Office Ahmad Ahmadi told IRNA, Trend reports.

Ahmadi noted that about $2.85 million worth of goods were exported through Mahabad customs last year.

“The exported goods were mainly carpets, poultry, brake fluid, washing powder, and so on,” he added.

The director stressed that more than 90 percent of the goods from Mahabad customs were exported to Iraq.

According to him, attempts were made to smuggle goods worth 270 billion rials (about $6.42 million) through the Mahabad border checkpoint last year. These goods were automotive spare parts, clothing, household appliances, and mobile phones.

Reportedly, there are 9 border checkpoints in Iran's West Azerbaijan Province. The province has more than 960 km of borders with Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Iraq.
