BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 2

By Elnur Baghishov – Trend:

The creation of a free trade zone in the Ardabil Province (northwestern Iran) will contribute to the development of the Azerbaijan-Iran economic cooperation, the Governor of Iran’s Ardabil Province Akbar Behnamjoo said, Trend reports citing the governor office’s website.

According to him, the Iranian government and parliament have approved a project related to the zone creation. The project has been approved by the Economic and Infrastructure Committee of the Expediency Discernment Council of Iran and will be implemented after approval during the plenary session of the council.

Behnamjoo added that the creation of a railway terminal in the north of the province is one of the plans to develop economic relations between the two countries. Work is underway to finalize plans for the construction of the railway terminal. The maps for the construction of a railway terminal in the country have been prepared and the construction work will be launched soon.

“The creation of a joint industrial park between the two countries is a new plan that has not been between other countries. Research on the creation of a joint industrial park should be conducted and laws should be regulated,” he said.

The governor noted that the trade turnover between Iran and Azerbaijan through the Bilasuvar border checkpoint in Ardabil Province increased by 70 percent over the last Iranian (from March 20, 2020 through March 20, 2021), compared to the preceding Iranian year (from March 21, 2019 through March 19, 2020) and amounted to $250 million.
