The unemployment rate in Georgia increased by 0.9 percentage points in 2020 compared to 2019 and amounted to 18.5 percent, Trend reports via the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat).
“In 2020 labor force (economically active population) constituted 50.5 percent of the working age population (population aged 15 and older). The labor force participation rate (economic activity rate) declined by 1.3 percentage points, while the employment rate - by 1.5 percentage points compared to the previous year”, the document reads.
The labor force participation rate (economic activity rate) in urban settlements decreased by 0.3 percentage points and by 2.6 percentage points in rural settlements compared to the previous year.
The employment rate in urban settlements as well as in rural areas decreased by 1.3 and 1.8 percentage points respectively.
The 2020 Unemployment Report was developed by Geostat through a new methodology that no longer considers rural self-employed people who are not engaged in economic activity as employed persons.
As a result of COVID-19 pandemic, the unemployment rate in Georgia increased dramatically in 2020 and more than 100,000 citizens received compensations from the state.
