BAKU, Azerbaijan, February 28

By Amina Nazarli - Trend:

The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) will help Turkmenistan integrate the SPECA (Special Program for the Economic of Central Asia) Sustainable Trade Principles, Dmitry Mariyasin, Deputy Executive Secretary of the UNECE told Trend.

“Building on the findings of a study on trade opportunities, we will help Turkmenistan in its efforts towards integrating the SPECA Sustainable Trade Principles, from the policy, legal and economic standpoints,” he said.

According to Mariyasin, SPECA, established in 1998, is a unique platform that brings participating countries, UNECE and ESCAP (Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific), together for cooperation in areas including transport, trade, water management, energy, environmental protection, innovation and technology, gender and the SDGs.

The deputy executive secretary went on to say that the UNECE will also support Turkmenistan’s shift towards sustainability and circularity.

Moreover, this year the Commission will also launch a Global Assessment of Turkmenistan’s National Statistical System.

“This will coincide with the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the adoption by UNECE of the Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics, which were subsequently adopted as a global standard by the UN General Assembly in 2014. These principles form the cornerstone of the work of Official statistics offices all around the world,” the deputy executive secretary said.

Commenting on Turkmenistan’s election as Vice-Chair of the UNECE in 2021-2023, Mariyasin said that the UNECE is looking forward to excellent teamwork with the Chair, ambassador Tichy-Fisslberger from Austria, and the Vice-Chair, ambassador Haljanov from Turkmenistan, until our next Commission session in April 2023.

“I want to thank the government of Turkmenistan for its involvement in the work of our Commission. The mission of UNECE is to promote regional cooperation and integration as a means of achieving sustainable development in its region. The Chairperson and the Vice-Chairperson play an important role in facilitating this mandate,” he said.
