Azerbaijan, Georgia & Turkey to establish railway consortium

Within the Kars-Akhalkalaki-Tbilisi-Baku project Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey will establish a consortium, which will be responsible for implementation of the project and attract funds. The consortium will become the operator of the project and solve issues of tariff for transportation and distribution of profits from the project in the future, the Railway Department of the Azerbaijani Transport Ministry told Trend. Some finance institutes such as Japanese finance organizations demonstrated interest in financing of the project. Besides, the Kars-Akhalkalaki-Tbilisi-Baku was included into the list of the priority projects of EU.

At present, Turkish Yuksel Domonik Company completed work in the framework of the project and submitted three versions of border crossing to Georgian government for consideration. Georgia will consider the versions and chose one of them. Then the sides will determine value of the project on construction of the railway through Georgia and Turkey.

The preliminary value of the project comprises $400m taking into consideration construction and reconstruction of infrastructure. The length of the railway makes up 98 km, including, 30 km falling to Georgia, 68 km - to Turkey.
