Azerbaijan to offer WB participation in new road projects

On May 8, World Banks Mission for Roads started negotiations with Azeri Government on the banks possible participation in new road projects, Trend reports quoting banks representatives to Baku. The Mission consists of Motu Konishi, Director of Infrastructure, EMEA, and Olivier Le Ber, road infrastructure expert.

WB is eager to invest some $550mln in the countrys transport sector in 2006-2009. These funds will be issued through IBRD, and the total financing may not exceed with this amount. Within the new strategy, Azerbaijan is receiving $220mln in recover two highways. The project also envisages expansion and change of route with highway Alat-Masalli and repairs of highway Baku-Shemakha-Mugan that links Baku to the republics western regions.

Governmental officials told Trend that the bank will also be purposed to participate in recovery of highways Gajigabul-Imishli (Beylagan), Shemakha-Yevlakh, Yevlakh-Zagatala.

The banks mission is staying in Baku till May 10, 2006.
