The Ministry of Economic Development agreed to accept World Banks assistance for increase of efficiency of Baku city transport system and elimination of traffic jams. Ministry officials told Trend the relevant notice had already been dispatched the Cabinet of Ministers.

The Bank suggested rendering technical assistance for elimination of traffic jams on streets of the capital and improvement of Baku city transport infrastructure within the projects on two bypass roads.

Due to correction of first 21.5km long bypass road construction costs, construction operations themselves are commenced in October 2006 and finished in December 2008.

Financial sources for the construction of second road, 58km in length, are not well defined as the project itself is still being developed.

During 4 years WB is annually investing $200mln in Azeri infrastructural projects, said Peter Thompson, Director of Energy and Infrastructure Sector, EMEA, World Bank, while making his visit to Baku in early August 2006.
