LED headlights begin to arrive on autos

(autoinsidernews) - . With LED taillight technology now spreading down to lower-level sedans, wagons, sports cars and SUVs/crossovers, LED headlights are now beginning to be seen in the automotive sector. LED taillights provide better packaging efficiency, faster response times and longer life than traditional bulbs, and the same benefits apply to headlights as well, reports Trend.

LED technology also allows for greater freedom to create unique headlight designs for vehicles.Toyota got the jump with the announcement that its Lexus LS 600h L hybrid luxury sedan would feature LED headlights, in addition to all of its other technical wonders. But Audi is close behind with its R8, which features LEDs for all headlight functions including dipped beam, main beam, daytime running lights and turn signal indicators. The R8 will also have LED taillights and LEDs for indirect lighting for the glass covered engine.

But there are a few drawbacks for LED headlights, mostly focused on heat buildup. Despite the disadvantages expected to see LED headlights spreading down to more mainstream automobiles in the coming years.
