(autoinsidernews) - Nissan may be joining the world of Formula 1 in the near future, according to French newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche. The automaker may link up with former team owner Alain Prost and be on track as early as 2008. Four-time world champion Prost is reported to have spoken with Nissan and Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn about the project.

However, Nissan's corporate Vice-President Simon Sproule only admitted that F1 is an option. Right now we are involved in regional championships in Japan, the US and in Africa. We have studied the possibility to invest in a worldwide competition, he added.

Personnel from Nissan have attended several Grand Prix events this season to observe, learn and understand the discipline's finer details.

Earlier this year, rumors indicated that the world champion Renault team may change its name to Nissan, reports Trend.
