Chevrolet to tighten up usage of SS moniker

(autoinsidernews) - General Motors is admitting that it may have carried away with the use of its SS moniker in recent years, said company executives. Not every car that has some extra features and fancy racing stripes can be an SS, said Ed Welburn, GM Design global vice president, reports Trend.

Starting with the 2007 model year, General Motors will be more careful with what vehicles it badges SS. Now only cars with the ultimate horsepower, braking and handling will wear an SS badge. The transition will start with the recently-unveiled Chevrolet Equinox Sport, which didn't get an SS badge as expected, despite having 42 percent more horsepower, and other performance enhancing features.

GM will no longer offer an SS version of the Malibu. That's one that probably shouldn't have gotten the SS label, said Chevrolet Marketing Director Cheryl Catton.

Now, from the beginning, we build a car to match the characteristics of the brand, said GM sales chief Mark LaNeve.
