(autoinsidernews) - Volkswagen has said that it will release its first gas-electric hybrid in 2009. VW's first hybrid model will be a Jetta and will have greater fuel efficiency than a normal TDI Volkswagen model. The Jetta TDI gets a fuel economy rating of 35/42 mpg. A hybrid variant could likely see 50 mpg on the highway, reports Trend.
As Honda and Toyota have dominated hybrid sales in the U.S., Volkswagen has focused on improving its diesel engines. Some of its TDI models give hybrids a run for their money, including the Polo BlueMotion, which has lower CO2 emissions than the Toyota Prius and achieves an amazing 72.4 mpg.
The Jetta's gasoline-electric drivetrain could find its way into other of VW's small cars, like the Golf.
