Baku in Need of a New Master Plan  – Architect

Azerbaijan , Baku /corr Trend U.Ismayilova / The Union of Azerbaijani Architects supers the approval of a new Master Plan of Baku. Hafiz Amirkhanov, the First Vice President of the Union, informed on 13 March on the non-implementation of a Master Plan adopted in 1987. It had been developed since 1920.

As a result of absence of such plan the appearance of Baku becomes non-esthetic, while accidents during the construction of facilities, construction of facilities, ecological problems, water pollution, electricity shortages have become intensified.

"The expansion of facilities and their construction should begin with examination of geographic state and maximal height of the buildings. The problem is that the professional architects do not participate in this process," he complained. At the same the architect warned that the endless construction should cause catastrophe of the city.

"Earthquake forcing 5-6 might cause their collapse and it would certainly cause mass losses," he alerted. Amirkhanov explained that the construction work is not carried out in accordance with the international standards , which envisages the use of material of firm metal, but not reinforced concrete.

"It is necessary to clean the city from these smells and dust, which negatively impact on people's health. Afterwards it is possible to built first the facilities which will help Baku to restore its appearance, for instance, many-storey automobile parking areas. Afterwards, the construction work should be carried out in accordance with the Master plan, he concluded.
