Baku-Tbilisi-Kars Project to be Discussed in Baku

Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr S. Aliyev / A meeting of the working groups of Azerbaijan, Turkey and Georgia will be held in Baku on 15 May. The implementation of the project to construct the railway linking Baku-Tbilisi-Kars will be discussed at the meeting, a source at the Azerbaijani Transport Ministry reported on 14 May. A number of organizational matters are expected to be agreed upon during the meeting.

Azerbaijan has allotted $50mln to Georgia within the framework of the project on construction of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway. The Turkish Yuksel Domonik company is working upon the feasibility study of the Georgia's part of the railway ( Turkey's feasibility study is already prepared). The development of the feasibility study will be completed in the middle of May. A tender will be announced later and therefore construction work will begin in June.

The Azerbaijani President issued the decree 'Arrangements on Implementation of Baku-Tbilisi-Kars Project' to which a state commission was established under the chairmanship of the Transport Minister Ziya Mammadov. The commission includes representatives of the Finance Ministry, Foreign Ministry, Economic Development Ministry, the heads of the State Oil Fund, the railway and the International Bank of Azerbaijan.

The Azerbaijani Government appointed the Ministry of Transport as the co-ordinator of the project. The State Oil Fund of Azerbaijan will allocate $200mln credit to the Georgian Government through the Ministry.
