Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr S. Aliyev / Azerbaijani State Railway has intentions to purchase five new locomotives by the end of 2007 for transportation of increasing freights. The locomotives will be purchased at AZN 12.5mln, allotted to the State Railway from the public budget of Azerbaijan.

According to the representatives of the State Railway, the locomotives are most likely to be purchased from Russia as they correspond to technical norms of the Azerbaijani railway system. Spare parts will be supplied together with the locomotives.

Last year the State Railway purchased five new locomotives from Russian Uraltrade and Dortekhcomplect companies.

The renewal of hauling equipment is required due to an annual increase of transportation via the TRACECA transport corridor, as well as the soon-to-begin implementation of such projects as the opening of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway service, and it being within the framework of the 'North-South' transport corridor.

According to expert estimations, some 80% of the hauling equipment has been exhausted and requires renewal.

The State Railway uses 111 electric locomotives, with ninety of them used for freight transportation and twenty-one for passenger transportation.
