Construction of Turkish Section of Baku-Tbilisi-Kars Railway Scheduled for September (video)

Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr. S.Aliyev / The first meeting of Coordination Council discussed implementation of an Azerbaijan and Georgia agreement on conditions, including financing, projecting, construction, reconstruction, rehabilitation and exploration of a railway from Marabda (Georgia) to the border of Turkey, as well as credit agreement on implementation of a new Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway project was discussed.

Ratification of the Charter of the Coordination Council, the project of business plan of the Marabda-Kartsakhi Railway Ltd, as well as technical tasks for designing, rehabilitation and reconstruction of Marabda - Akhakalaki railway were on focus at the meeting. Ramaz Giorgadzeh, the director of the Marabda- Kartsakhi Railway ltd, stated that a range of meetings on the project had been held.

"The company can announce on the recruitment only after approving the budget," Giorgadzeh said.

The sides also got familiar with the railway route running to Belarus and Ukraine, as well as railway systems of Europe and former Soviet Union for their further usage on the border between Georgia and Turkey.

The tender documents for construction and rehabilitation of Georgian section of road have been developed. Tender will be held on six lots.

Musa Panahov, the Azerbaijani deputy Transport Minister, said that the tender for construction of Turkish section of the railway was announced. The construction is schedule to commence in September. The length of Turkish section of the railway, running from Kars to Georgia, is 76km. In addition, the tunnel with 2,000m length will be laid on the border.
