Tax Privileges May be Provided for Grain Importers: Agriculture Ministry

Azrebaijan, Baku /corr. Trend S.Babayeva / The Ministry of Agriculture of Azerbaijan does not exclude the possibility that proposals will be made to provide tax privileges for the country's grain importers in order to stabilize prices for bread.

The Head of the Economy and Finance Department of the Ministry of Agriculture of Azerbaijan, Rafig Mejidov, said on 20 July that the Ministry is not going to take any measures with regards to the price increase for bread.

"No decisions have been made on the measures with regards to the price increase for bread. The Ministry is discussing the possibility of providing tax privileges. This process will not affect the general population," Mejidov said.

According to the Head of the Economic Research Centre, Gubad Ibadoglu, the average price for grain in exporting countries increased by $60-$70 due to fewer crops.

Azerbaijan exports grain mainly from Russia and Kazakhstan. In 2004 Azerbaijan harvested 2.158mln t of grain, in 2005 - 2.126mln, in 2006 - 2.078mln, but in 2007 this figure will continue to decrease, down to only 2mln tons, according to the Economic Research Centre's forecasts.
