Importance of EU-Caucasus Cooperation for Diversification of Gas Deliveries: EU Energy Commissioner

Azerbaijan, Baku, 14 November / Trend corr. S.Aliyev / "The European Union's (EU) relations with countries of Caucasus and Central Asia have great strategic importance in diversification of  gas deliveries," Andris Piebalgs, the EU Energy Commissioner said at the 4th energy summit in Baku on 14 November.

According to Piebalgs, the developments in Georgia confirmed this fact.

"We fully realize that the country, which hosts the summit, made a difficult and courageous decision concerning issues of diversification and energy security," Piebalgs said.

The EU strategic partners' interest to diversification in conditioned by strengthening of their negotiation position, the Commissioner said.

"We want to realize mechanism for stable diversification by the side of providers, as well," Piebalgs said.

The Commissioner stressed importance of development of South corridor to deliver energy resources from the Caspian region.

South gas corridor is the planned route passing from the Caspian region via territory of Turkey to Europe and designated to deliver gas from Central Asia to Europe. The corridor includes the Transcaspian pipeline from Turkmenistan to Azerbaijan and Nabucco gas pipeline passing from Turkey via territories of Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary and finishing in Austria.
