EU monitors in Ukraine will solve gas conflict: expert
Russia, Moscow, Jan. 9 / Trend , R.Agayev/
EU officials monitoring Russian gas supplies to Europe via Ukraine will solve the gas conflict quickly, RusEnergy agency partner Igor Ivakhnenko told Trend .
"EU officials have agreed to send in their officials to Ukraine to monitor gas transit," Ivakhnenko said. "This should solve the conflict quickly. With independent supervisors involved, Russian gas supplies to Europe will continue smoothly."
The EU monitors may solve this particular situation, but sending EU supervisors to Ukraine on a more or less permanent basis is impossible, he added.
"This is an emergency rescue operation," Ivakhnenko said.
Solving the problem through a well-grounded plan requires more time and additional efforts, he added. These efforts include diversifying transit routes - and possibly developing routes outside Ukraine, he said.
"They may find a political solution to the problem if the Ukrainian government becomes more friendly towards Russia," Ivakhnenko said. "In this event, if we take Belarus as an example, prices will be low and cooperation will be more comfortable."
