Russia, Ukraine agree on gas prices

Russia, Moscow, 18 Jan. / Trend , R.Agayev / " Russia and Ukraine have agreed on gas prices for 2009," Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said after the meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Yulia Timoshenko.

"We agreed that our Ukrainian partners will have a discount of 20 percent in 2009 on condition that the preferential tariff for piping Russian gas to European consumers through Ukraine remains in force in 2009 and that the price for piping will be same as in 2008," Putin said.

"We also agreed that starting Jan. 1, 2010 we will entirely shift to price and tariff formation fully in accordance with European standards without any exemptions or discounts regarding both the transit and the price of gas," he said.

Ukrainian Prime Minister said the talks were hard, but they have reached understanding. "Contract documents can be signed."

"We have instructed respective bodies. The documents will be prepared by Monday which will be enable to resume transit of gas to Europe," Timoshenko said.
