The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) may continue drilling to increase the depth of an exploration well on the onshore Jahandar field, located in the north-west of the country near the border with Georgia, a SOCAR source said on March 3.

"The project has experienced small changes. Drilling revealed that reserves lay a little deeper. We are currently researching this. The well may be deepened," he said.

Exploration drilling is aimed at revealing presence of oil. Currently, well's depth exceeds 3,000 meters. It has not yet been determined to what extend the well will be deepened, said the source.

The SOCAR plans to carry out a phased exploration on promising fields Babak, Ashrafi and Garabag as part of the outlook plan up to 2015, a SOCAR source said earlier. SOCAR will explore the fields independently.

There are 57 oil and gas fields in Azerbaijan, with 18 offshore. The SOCAR employs about 63,000 people.
