Investments in the electrical power-engineering sector through foreign loans under state guarantee topped $1.2 billion, the Azerbaijani Cabinet of Ministers said in their 2008 report.
Electrical power engineering is the second most active sector in the country after oil.
Most investments were made in constructing new power stations and high tension substations.
Azerbaijan's energy system capacity is 5,740 MWt. Its energy system includes 16 power stations. Eleven are thermoelectric power stations with a capacity of 4,772 MWt. Five are hydroelectric power stations with a capacity of 968 MWt.
A total of 21.6 billion KWt/h of energy was produced in Azerbaijan in 2008.
A special program to construct small hydroelectric power stations was designed. Twenty-four small stations will be built.
