Azerbaijan will have surplus of 1,000 megawatt-power by late 2009, Azerenergy Joint Stock Company (JSC) (electricity producer in Azerbaijan) Vice President Marlen Asgarov told Trend .

"Therefore, we decided to export power to foreign countries. So far, we carried out export in exchange regime with Georgia, Russia and Iran, but we decided to expand our export opportunities," Asgarov said.

The JSC vice president stressed that these opportunities will arouse after signing a memorandum to design electricity transmission lines which connect Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey. The memorandum was signed in Tbilisi on April 8.

"It will enable us not only to export electricity to Turkey and further," Asgarov said. Estimate work will begin after signing the memorandum and then a finance source will be searched to implement the project, he said.

Asgarov stressed Azerbaijan's chance to export electricity is expanding. "We inherited [after USSR's collapse] 60 percent of depreciated system, but the country's energy policy which was directed to change an old system had positive results. We could build 5 power stations within 17 months," Asgarov said.

At present the Azerbaijani energy system is fully independent and can provide own need. "Moreover we are ready to export power," Asgarov said.
