The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) plans to launch technological modernization of two oil refineries in Azerbaijan, SOCAR Ecology Department head Azer Aliyev said.
The refineries will be modernized as a part of the Mechanical Cleanness of Development item of the Kyoto protocol on climate change in an effort to reduce emission of carbon to atmosphere.
The carbon emission is expected to be reduced by improving technological scheme and fuel system in the refineries and modernize furnaces.
"The modernization is expected to be performed at Heydar Aliyev refinery and Azneftyag refinery. The project is expected to be launched this year. The project aims to reduce carbon emission to atmosphere," Aliyev said.
Modernization of technological scheme and furnaces in the SOCAR refineries is a priority. Azerbaijan has two oil refineries with total capacity of 20 million tons of oil annually. Both refineries are part of the SOCAR and annually processes more than six million tons of oil extracted in the onshore and offshore via own funds.
