Energy will be one of the European Union's (EU) priorities as previous under Sweden's presidency, the European Commission's representative on energy issues Ferran Tarradellas-Espuny said.

"The Swedish Presidency have already announced that Energy will be one of their priority areas and more particularly the security of energy supply," Tarradellas-Espuny wrote to Trend in an email.

The Czech Republic passed a rotating presidency of European Union to Sweden on July 1. Stockholm announced the fight against financial crisis and unemployment, the EU's security, as well as prevention of climate change amongst its priorities.

Ongoing work on the Southern Corridor will continue, the official of the European Commission said.

"Sweden has already demonstrated its support for the energy agenda of diversification and solidarity in its strong support for the Eastern Partnership," Espuny said.

The South Corridor project is the EU's priority project to diversify gas deliveries and strengthen the European energy security. The Nabucco gas pipeline which is a component part of this project will transport gas from the Caspian region to the European countries. Construction of the pipeline is expected to begin in 2011 and first deliveries - in 2014. Its maximum capacity will be 31 billion cubic meters per year. The EU countries and Turkey will sign an intergovernmental agreement on this project in Ankara on July 13.
