Turkmenistan achieves significant results during world crisis: Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov

"We are able to achieve impressive results, which testify huge potential of Turkmenistan even in terms of continuing world financial-economic crisis," Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov said.

Berdymukhamedov spoke about it after published information about parameters of national economy development over last seven months of 2009, the governmental press-service said.

It was stressed that this period completed with positive macroeconomic indices and is characterized by sustained GDP growth dynamics. Income of the state budget is executed on 121 percent, expenses - on 94 percent.

Investments were assimilated 2.5 times more during the first six months than for the same period of 2008.

High growth of physical production volumes in most industries was reached compared to the same period of 2008. exchange rate of national currency is still stabile.

Volume of retail turnover hits 114 percent for 7 months of 2009, compared to corresponding period of 2008. As a result of the first six months, foreign trade turnover increased 22 percent. Export exceeded import in 1.7 times.

Summing up report, Berdymukhamedov noted that, in general, results of seven months of 2009 testify dynamic development of leading branches of industry.

"It is direct result of work conducted in diversification of the national economy and actions taken to counteract world financial-economic crisis" Berdymukhamedov said. He drew attention that large-scale social-economic programs are implemented without use of funds of the Stabilization Fund, and, moreover, these funds have been steadily increasing.

Turkmenistan is key player on energy market in the Caspian region, in particular, in supply of natural gas. Up to now, Russia imported almost all gas. At present, Russia lays down terms for re-consideration of long-term contract. Turkmen President stirred up actions to find alternatives.

gas pipeline to China will be put into operation by late 2009. Additional route to neighboring Iran is being constructed. Pakistan has recently signed a protocol to accelerate implementation of the Trans-Afghani project. Moreover, Turkmenistan declared about its readiness to provide fuel for the European Nabucco project.

According to local economists, Turkmenistan is achieving stabile results due to diversification of economic branches owing to development of textile, increase of processing volumes in the fuel and energy complex, generating of electric power for export, export of cotton. Turkmenistan  provides itself with food owing to cultivation of wheat and livestock growth.

Turkmenistan proclaimed a stage-by-stage transition from planned to market economy in updated Constitution in autumn 2008. During this time unification of exchange rates was conducted, denomination of national currency was launched, accounting passes to the international standards.

"We must not reduce high rate of development of our economy in future to solve tasks, including, welfare and prosperity of the Turkmen people", Berdymukhamedov said.

Turkmen Supreme Control Chamber was charged to analyze reasons of gap in some industries on several technical-economic indices, and submit results of check at one of the next governmental meetings. Work of Turkmenneft state concern and the State Committee for Tourism were criticised.
