In 2010, the Kazakh Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry and the KazMunaiGaz National Company must speed up the Eskene-Kurik pipeline project, Kazakh Prime Minister Karim Masimov said at the Energy Ministry's expanded meeting.

"The accords on this project that were reached between the presidents of the two countries during French President' Astana visit should be implemented rapidly to join export of the Caspian oil to the world markets as soon as possible, he added.

The Eskene-Kurik pipeline is a part of the Kazakhstan Caspian Transportation System (KCST) project that intends to export increasing volumes of Kazakh oil produced mainly on the Kashagan and Tengiz fields, to international markets via the Caspian Sea through the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline and other oil systems located in Azerbaijan.

The KCTS will consist of two parts: the Eskene-Kurik pipeline in Kazakhstan and the Trans-Caspian project (consisting of a terminal on the Kazakh coast of the Caspian Sea, tankers and vessels, a terminal on the Azerbaijani coast of the Caspian Sea and various facilities connecting these to the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan).

According to Masimov, the traditional direction of Kazakh oil exports through Russia also continues its development.
