Turkmenistan plans to increase electricity exports to six billion kilowatts by 2020 by reconstructing the power plant in the city of Mary.

According to an official Turkmen source, the Cabinet of Ministers is preparing a package of proposals.

Mary is the regional center of the Mary region, and the local power plant provides electricity not only to the country's major agricultural region, but also exports electricity to Iran and Turkey.

The question of further modernization of the energy sector was raised at the last government's meeting.

The national program for further development of Turkmen's energy sector envisages an increase in generating facilities' capacity. Also, local consumption of electricity in Turkmenistan will increase to 20 billion kilowatts in 2020.
