Turkmenistan and the UK signed a protocol to forge cooperation between the UK Energy Department and the Turkmen Petroleum and Mineral Resources Ministry in Ashgabat.

An official Turkmen source said the signing was the culmination of a joint energy forum. Ashgabat is hosing the event for the second time. UK State Energy Minister Lord Hunt represented London at the event.

Representatives of British Petroleum, Gaffney Cline Ass, Denton, Hermes, KBR, Shell and Skybridge arrived in Turkmenistan to attend the forum. The Turkmen leadership received the British minister. The minister also had talks with top managers in the fuel and energy complex.

The UK is one of the largest consumers of natural gas in Europe and is interested in diversifying its natural gas supplies by connecting the resources of the Caspian region. Speaking at a business forum, Hunt noted that issues of energy security are a priority for the EU.

Turkmenistan, in turn, has become a key player in the gas market in the region. Recently, the country managed to diversify access to world markets with supplies to China, Iran and Russia.

According to Hunt, "the business forum will provide an impetus to the further development of cooperation in the priority fuel and energy sector."
