SOCAR conducts drilling in Kalmaz underground gas storage

The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) conducts drilling of two wells on Kalmaz underground gas storage project to expand the storage capacity of the facility, the SOCAR reported March 29.

The design depth of both wells is 1400 meters. Drilling of one of them has almost finished and commissioning of the second well is planned for early May, the company reported.

These operations are conducted within the increase of active volumes of storage reserves from 1.2 billion cubic meters to 2.4 billion cubic meters.

Currently, the country has two underground storage facilities, Garadag and Kalmaz.

In 2009 SOCAR pumped into underground storage facilities of the country record volume of gas at a rate of about two billion cubic meters as compared to 1.4 billion in 2008. It was pumped about 1.16 billion cubic meters of gas to the Kalmaz underground gas storage facility in 2009 and over than 795.3 million cubic meters to the Garadag.
