Azerbaijan, Baku, June 8 / Trend U. Sadikhova /

A Syrian delegation is expected to visit Azerbaijan in the nearest future to discuss cooperation in oil and gas field, Syrian deputy oil minister Hassan Zeinab told Trend over phone.

"We are waiting for the Azerbaijani side to specify the date. Apparently, the visit will take place this summer. The date that will be acceptable for ministers on both sides is being determined," Zeinab said.

He said that during the visit the issues of cooperation between Damascus and Baku in the field of oil and gas, as well as the supply of Azerbaijani gas to Syria will be discussed.

A decision on the organization of the visit was reached earlier during the working visit of Azerbaijani Minister of Industry and Energy Natiq Aliyev, SOCAR senior representatives and leadership of the Azerbaijan State Oil Academy to Syria.

During this visit, both sides reached an agreement to start negotiations on signing of a long-term agreement on sale of natural gas in the volume of 1-1,5 billion cubic meters a year. The parties discussed the prospects for transporting Azerbaijani gas via the Syrian gas network to the Arab countries, if the agreement on this issue is signed in future.

Zeinab said that Azerbaijani gas supplies will begin after the completion of the connecting gas pipeline between Syria and Turkey. It is planned for late 2011 - early 2012. These countries are constructing 63-km long gas pipeline between Aleppo (Syria), and Kilis (Turkey).
