The United States appreciates Kazakhstan's readiness to host an international nuclear fuel bank, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of International Nuclear Energy Policy and Cooperation Edward McGinnis said today during his two-day visit to the country.

"We appreciate Kazakhstan's readiness to host a international nuclear fuel bank. But the work, of course, will be held in the framework and under the auspices of the IAEA," McGinnis said.

He noted that the United States also commends Kazakhstan's policy of peacefully using nuclear energy.

"Kazakhstan has become an important supplier to the global nuclear market, as it is the largest uranium producer in the world," McGinnis said. "We appreciate the country's balanced position in terms of further ways to develop the nuclear cycle here in Kazakhstan."

McGinnis is responsible for the Energy Department's international civilian nuclear energy activities, including international nuclear energy research, development and demonstration cooperation, international framework and partnership development, international nuclear energy policy, and other international civilian nuclear energy-related activities.
