Uzbekenergo to introduce electricity meters by late 2010

Uzbekenergo plans to introduce an automated electricity control and accounting system worth $34.8 million in its factories by late 2010, the state-owned company told Trend.

Uzbekenergo plans to introduce a single network of 31 collection centers at power substations and power grids, as well as 12,800 accounting points across the country.

According to experts, the project will save 2.75 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year.

The new system is being implemented in the first stage of a state program to modernize the country's electricity accounting system. The program's approximate cost is $360 million.

The program will be financed by Uzbekenergo, the Uzbek Reconstruction and Development Fund, and foreign investments and loans.

New industrial and civil facilities will also be opened under the program.

There are 42 power plants with a total capacity of 12,358 megawatts in Uzbekistan, including 11 thermal power plants with a total capacity of 9,870 megawatts and 31 hydroelectric power plants with a total capacity of 1,700 megawatts.

More than 98 percent of the country's electricity is generated through electric plants operating as part of Uzbekenergo. The company has 16 electric power stations with a capacity of 12,040 megawatts.
