Turkmenistan plans to optimize capacity of roads, which will increase international goods transportation.

According to the "Neutral Turkmenistan" newspaper, with this purpose in 2010-2011 the length of highways will increase by almost 3,500, km in 2012-2015 years - by 7,100 km, in 2016-2020 years - to 7,300 km.

Throughout the country, by 2020 the length of highways will increase by 1.9 times compared to 2010.

At present, the length of Turkmenistan's highways is about 14,000 kilometers, almost 90 percent of which have hard surface.

In accordance with the major public projects, highways with hard coating Serdar-Etrek-Gudriolum, Mary­Serhetabat, Tedjen-Serahs, Turkmenbashi-­Garabogaz-Gosgranitsa (Kazakhstan) highways with a hard coating will be reconstructed in 2011-2020.

It is planned to build new and reconstruct existing highways of first category with average width of 12.25 meters. One of the sections will be Archman-Turkmenbashi with length of 443 km, section of highway Mary-Turkmenabat - 255 km, section of highway Turkmenabat-Farabi - 35.7 km, Ashgabat-Karakum-Dashoguz highway with length of 546 km, etc.

"In the future, mobility of population will increase; entrepreneurial activity will become more active, different types of services will develop. Structural changes will occur in the direction of increasing the transport services offer by the private sector in the regulation of the transport demand," the article says.

New transport technologies will be introduced in order to bring quality of highways into line with international standards.
