Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak issued on Wednesday a final decision to choose and start building Egypt's first nuclear power station at al-Dabba area (160 km west of the country's main harbor of Alexandria), official MENA News Agency quoted presidential spokesman Suliman Awwad as saying.

"Mubarak has put an end to a controversy over the site for the first Egyptian nuclear power station by naming al-Dabba area as the selected location," Awwad said, Xinhua reported.

"Mubarak settled the controversy in this respect during a meeting with members of the Supreme Council for the Peaceful Purposes of Nuclear Power after its restructure, Awwad added.

Awwad termed the meeting as very important and marks a leap in the implementation of a strategic program for energy supplies and peaceful uses of nuclear energy.

In October 2007, President Hosni Mubarak announced Egypt will start a program of setting up several power-generating nuclear stations to meet the country's increasing demand of energy, noting the peaceful use of nuclear energy would be part of the national energy strategy.
