Kazakhstan is pushing toward China in an effort to strengthen its economy, head of the Kazakh Samruk-Kazyna National Welfare Fund Kairat Kelimbetov told Trend today.

"The most promising direction for future exports is China," he said. "We should work on that."

Kelimbetov added that Kazakhstan has two basic export options.

"The first would be to export produced goods to countries in the United Customs Union where we can more or less compete with Russian and Belarusian companies, although this would be very difficult," he said.

The second option is to export traditional Kazakh commodities such as oil, gas and uranium to China, Kelimbetov said.

China seems the more promising option, he noted.

"As China's economy is projected to be two-thirds the size of the U.S. economy at the moment and is projected to overtake the U.S. economy in 2030, the future of Kazakh exports lies there," he said.
