SOCAR to finally decide on Baku and Absheron Peninsula’s gas system modernization variant

The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) will complete the process of considering proposals of the European companies E. ON and RWE within the project of reconstruction and modernization of the gas system of the Baku city and the Absheron Peninsula by late 2010, a source in SOCAR said today.

The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) will complete the process of considering proposals of the European companies E. ON and RWE within the project of reconstruction and modernization of the gas system of the Baku city and the Absheron Peninsula by late 2010, a source in SOCAR said today.

According to estimates, the project's cost is estimated at more than one billion euros. The project envisages the construction of new compressor stations, laying of pipelines, installation of meters and conducting other infrastructure works that will bring the capital's gas system in accordance with international standards.

The source said SOCAR will make a final decision on choosing the variant by late 2010.

According to him, works on preparation of the project of reconstruction and modernization of the gas system of the Baku city and the Absheron Peninsula are scheduled to start early next year.

Earlier SOCAR head Rovnag Abdullayev said that the gas system of Baku and the Absheron Peninsula is the largest in the country, covering 650,000 users. He said 90 percent of the existing infrastructure should be updated to renew the gas system in Baku and on the Absheron Peninsula.
