Iran has achieved self-reliance through Turkmen gas imports thanks to the launch of the northern and northeast gas pipeline system yesterday, Iranian National Iranian Gas Export Company Director General and Deputy Oil Industry Minister Jawad Ouji was quoted as saying by the Mehr news agency today.

He said over 5.3 billion have been invested in the construction of the gas pipeline system, which allows gas to be directly pumped from the South Pars Field to Iran's eastern and northeastern provinces. The length of the country's northern and northeastern gas pipeline is 500 kilometers with a diameter of 48 inches.

Gas is currently being pumped through the system.

"Iran has reached self-reliance on Turkmen gas imports," he said. "The main purpose of these Turkmen natural gas imports is transportation to Europe and other countries."

"Iran's gas distribution networks saw their capacity icnrease by 60 million cubic meters with the launch of the second phase of a new gas pipeline, which improves supply stability to the North Khorasan, South Khorasan, Semnan, Khorasan Razavi and Mazandaran provinces," he said.

With the introduction of the second gas pipeline from Turkmenistan, Iran's opportunities to import natural gas increased from 25 to 40 million cubic meters. Last July, representatives of Iran and Turkmenistan moved to a new formula for gas imports and decided to revise the formula for gas imports once every three years. In accordance with this agreement, gas imports from Turkmenistan to Iran will increase from 6 to 14 billion cubic meters.
