Tehran, Kabul have agreed on oil transit: Afghan envoy

Iran and Afghanistan have reached agreement on transit of oil tankers from Iranian territory, said the newly-appointed Afghan ambassador to Tehran, ISNA reported.

"The agreement was made following an Afghan trade delegation's trip to Iran," the ambassador told a press conference on Wednesday.

He said the delegation involved ministers of finance and economy as well as 12 foreign ministry experts and 18 Afghan businessmen from Kandahar, Heart and Kabul.

"The agreements are in line with interests of the two sides particularly on transportation and goods transit to Afghanistan."

He also appreciated Iran for allowing fuel transit to Afghanistan from its borders and said, "attempts have been made to resolve the issue."

He also assured that the transited fuel would never be given to North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) forces in Afghanistan and said the Afghan delegation had assured Iran that the fuel would be only distributed among people.

Also regarding Iran's security concerns, he said, "as Afghan President Hamid Karzai has declared, we never allow any attack and assault against our neighbors particularly Iran and Pakistan. We have always called for strengthening of bilateral relations."

The Afghan diplomat also added that, "Afghan immigrants can stay in Iran legally following agreements between the two countries and their comings and goings problems will be fixed soon."
