"It so seems that the application of the Open Hole technology for completing the wells is the first and the most important challenge in the South Pars gas field, and the studies done by the Statoil Company reveal that the application of this method brings about a 30 to 50 percent increase in production capacity from the wells when compared with the completion method using Case Hole system. This will lead to level Iran's gas production capacity with that of Qatar in the shortest time possible," the Manager of the Drilling Department of PetroPars Company Mahmoud Javadian said.

Javadian said that the drilling progress in the South Pars gas field depends on the fulfillment of five significant strategies which must be taken into consideration in drilling operations," Open Hole method was used to complete the wells," he added.

He explained that this method was first used by Statoil in phases 6 through 8 of the South Pars where, in the well completion project, Open Hole method is used to complete the well instead of using the Layer and Case Hole systems in the reservoir.

He went on saying that evidently the production of these wells has shown 30 percent increase, three years following the production, compared with the wells which have not been drilled using the Case Hole Method. Iran's gas production capacity level will lead Qatar.

Describing the characteristics of the Open Hole Method, Javadian said: "At the time when a hole is drilled in the production layers of the gas reservoir, and the drilled section is not covered with tube casing and cement, but it is completed by Open Hole Method upon the completion of the drilling operations, and a holed pipe is placed inside the well to cover the hole firmly and prevent its probable collapse; though the South Pars wells usually do not collapse because of the very hard formation in which gas flows (Carbonate and dolomite)."

Javadian said that the use of Open Hole Method in drilling of South Pars Phases 6 through 8, led to the production of over 90 million cubic meters per day of gas from the three phases of 6, 7 and 8 instead of 75 million cubic meters per day of gas, and this is a great achievement and has granted the country a remarkable increase in production from this shared field.
