The Heydar Aliyev Baku Oil Refinery of the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) continues work on improving quality of produced diesel fuel and bringing it into line with the ecological standards Euro-3, a source in oil and gas market said on Tuesday.

This activity will include studies on production of diesel fuel, as well as work to be undertaken in order to bring production in line with Euro-3 standards.

"Now work is underway on the preparation of the official report on the plant's capacity and the measures that can be taken to bring the quality of diesel fuel into line with Euro-3 standards," the source said.

According to him, at present diesel fuel produced by SOCAR, complies with Euro-2 standards. SOCAR plans to start production of diesel fuel meeting Euro-3 standards by late 2011.

As SOCAR's senior representative said moving to diesel fuel production on standards Euro-3 will not take much time, but will require a large amount of money. Production of diesel fuel on Euro-3 standard will be possible particularly through the replacement of catalysts, and will cost the company $ 10 million.

In 2010, SOCAR produced 2.42 million tons of diesel fuel compared to 2.22 million tons in 2009.
