Turkmenistan, Ashgabat, Feb. 12 / Trend H.Hasanov /

In late February, Ashgabat will host an international conference on environmental aspects of the issue of laying pipelines under the Caspian Sea, the Turkmen media reported on Saturday.

This topic is discussed at the governmental meeting, at which President Gurbangulu Berdimuhammedov emphasized that the conference will be held as part of the country's energy strategy to create new export routes for the transportation of Turkmen energy resources to the world markets.

Berdimuhammedov said the possibility of laying pipelines under the Caspian Sea is among the projects under consideration, the Altin Asir television channel reported.

He instructed to organize the work of the forthcoming conference at the highest level through involving leading scientists and experts in spheres of the environment and construction of underwater communications.

"It is necessary to study the best international expertise and technology in this area so that the construction of offshore pipelines in the Caspian region was safe from the standpoint of impact on the environment," the Vatan newspaper quoted Berdimuhammedov as saying.

In late November 2010, the Azerbaijani and Turkmen governments had agreed on joint international conference on the Caspian environment. The sides agreed on the issue at the intergovernmental commission on economic cooperation held in Baku.

Berdimuhammedov said then that strengthening and developing friendly relations and multifaceted cooperation with neighboring Azerbaijan meet the interests of our two countries and peoples, as well as the main priorities of Turkmenistan's foreign policy aimed at equitable, mutually respectful and fruitful dialogue with all countries of the region and the world.

He stressed that Turkmenistan holds an active and responsible stance in this sphere, standing for further expansion of cooperation with neighboring countries of the region in this direction.

Turkmenistan will strengthen environmental assessments of oil and gas projects in the Caspian Sea upon the Presidential decree. It is reviewing the possible construction of the Trans-Caspian gas pipeline between Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan, which would deliver resources to the Nabucco project.

The Southern Energy Corridor is a priority EU energy project diversifying energy supply routes and sources and increasing EU energy security. The Southern Corridor includes the Nabucco gas pipeline, Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), White Stream, and ITGI (Turkey-Greece-Italy pipeline).

the Azerbaijani gas from the Shah Deniz field with reserves of 1.2 trillion cubic meters of gas is regarded as one of the main sources for the first phase of these projects, It is also expected to receive gas from Turkmenistan and Iraq as the main raw material in the future.
