OPEC oil price nears 100-dollar mark

The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) said Friday that its oil price rose to 99.77 dollars on the previous day, DPA reported.

As anti-government demonstrations continued in oil-rich Libya on Thursday, the group's basket price added 1.09 dollars per barrel (159 litres). But it stopped short of the 100-dollar mark, which has not been surpassed since September 2008.

The North African OPEC member produced 1.8 per cent of global oil supplies in January, according to the cartel's statistics.

Iran, which pumps 4 per cent of the world's oil, is also facing the prospect of new opposition rallies called for Sunday.
