Uzbekistan ups power generation by 2.7 percent

Uzbekistan increased power generation by 2.7 percent in January-February 2011 to 8,833 billion kilowatt hours compared to the same period of 2010, the Uzbek State Statistics Committee reported.

The volume of thermal energy delivered to the population and enterprises of the republic fell by 0.3 percent - to 4.21 million Gcal.

More than 98 percent of the generated power is produced at power plants included in Uzbekenergo, which was established on the basis of the Uzbek Energy and Electrification Ministry.

The Uzbek energy system has 42 power plants with a total capacity of 123,580 megawatts, including Uzbekenergo, which owns seven thermal power plants, six hydropower enterprises, and three thermal power plants. The total capacity of Uzbekenergo's 16 power plants is 12,040 megawatt.

As previously reported, Uzbekistan increased its electricity production by 3.5 percent in 2010 up to 51,712 billion kWh. The country reduced its electricity generation by 0.3 percent in 2009 to 49,954 billion kWh compared to 2008.
